Pop culture has more power than politics to move America, making the choice of Ellen DeGeneres to be the newest judge on "American Idol" good news.
Imagine. America's best-known openly gay woman will be a regular on America's top-rated TV show.

What's this country coming to?

Viewers offended by this development can, of course, turn the show off. They can cover their children's eyes.

But we doubt many will.

"American Idol," like DeGeneres' daytime talk show, is a ratings hit across the country, in red states and blue states alike. The water cooler talk the next day is just too much fun.

And what will everybody, including the most adamant opponents of gay rights, see when they tune in?

A charming and funny woman who has the wits to parry (finally!) with the caustic Simon Cowell.

And who just happens to be a lesbian. As if we should care.

"American Idol" is just a TV show. We know. But DeGeneres' appearance on the show is one more small twist in our nation's often painful evolution toward acceptance and full rights for all Americans, including gay men and women.

May more formal progress, such as same-sex marriage, follow.
