Equality Illinois attempted to fire up GLBTs and their allies about Illinois’ civil unions legislation during a Saturday “action day” at Center on Halsted.

The event, hosted by activist Vernita Gray, provided information about State Rep. Greg Harris’ (D-Chicago) civil unions bill, including ways supporters can get involved to ensure its passage.

Harris stressed the need for volunteers to canvass and lobby in Springfield. “Nothing gets an elected official’s attention like knocking on doors,” Harris said. “That’s when people really listen.”

Equality Illinois’ Rick Garcia said that taking immediate action is crucial because “we have a wonderful opportunity here in Illinois to ensure equality.”

Two canvassing events will take place in the near suburbs—areas where lawmakers are still on the fence—on April 18 and April 25. The event is free and Equality Illinois will provide transportation.

“We’re so close to the 60 votes (needed in the House),” Equality Illinois executive director Jim Madigan said. He indicated that about five lawmakers are still undecided. “We’re talking about something that is very possible, but it takes work.”

Equality Illinois is also organizing an April 29 lobby day for civil unions. To sign up for a canvassing event or the lobby day, visit equalityillinois.org.

Advocates also stressed that supporters should call, write or visit their state representatives and encourage friends, family and co-workers—particularly those living in suburban, central or southern Illinois—to do the same. Visit civilunionsillinois.org for additional resources.
